Timothy R. Shook

Timothy R. Shook is Chair of the Music Department and Professor of Music at Southwestern College where he has taught since 1988. Professor Shook teaches Applied Piano, Piano Class, Pedagogy, and Creativity. In addition, he operates the Creative Keyboard Studio, a large independent piano studio in Wichita, Kansas combining group and private instruction.

Professor Shook has presented workshops for piano teachers throughout the Mid-West United States, New York, Malaysia, and Singapore. He has written articles and reviews for American Music Teacher, Keys Magazine, Keyboard Companion, and Kansas Music Review. Professor Shook advocates for support and care of the mentally ill through local service and legislation at the local, state, and national level. He is a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Additionally, he has been certified to lead/teach Family to Family courses for families in crises.

Professor Shook served on the MTNA Board of Directors as the West Central Division Director from 2012–2014, and has held the positions of West Central Division Certification Commissioner and National Certification Commission Chair. He has provided leadership in the Kansas Music Teachers Association as president and in other offices. He is an active member of Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association and has presented papers and served on panels to the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. He has served as a discussion leader for the National Group Piano and Pedagogy Forum.

Professor Shook serves NASM as a visiting evaluator. He was a member of the Board of Directors from 2011–2015 as Chair of Region 3.

He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Wichita State University, and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Kansas State University.
