David Gier is Dean of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan, a position he has held since October 2018. Prior to this appointment, he served from 2010–2018 as Director of the School of Music at the University of Iowa after joining the faculty in 1995, and taught for six years at Baylor University.
An active orchestral and chamber musician, clinician and adjudicator, Dean Gier has performed and presented at many colleges, universities, and professional conferences, including the International Trombone Festival, the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the Music Educators’ National Conference, and the New York Brass Symposium. In Iowa, he performed regularly with the Iowa Brass Quintet and the Quad City Symphony. His recording of mixed chamber music featuring trombone was released on the Albany Records label in 2007. From 1990–2008, Dean Gier performed as principal trombone of the Breckenridge Festival Orchestra under the direction of Gerhardt Zimmermann.
Dean Gier was first elected to the Commission on Accreditation in 2014.
Dean Gier received Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Musical Arts, and Master of Music degrees from Yale University and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan.
