Mary Ellen Poole

Mary Ellen Poole is the Stanley and Marcia Gumberg Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Professor of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to her current appointment, she served as the director of the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music in the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Dean Poole previously served for 10 years as Dean of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and for 18 years at Millikin University in Illinois.

As a musicologist, her research, publications, and presentations have focused on fin-de-siècle Paris, cabaret chansons and chansonniers, music as political propaganda during the Radical Republic, and the ideology of teaching music to the working class.

Professor Poole serves NASM as a visiting evaluator. She was a member of the NASM Commission on Accreditation from 2010–2015. She has also served as member and Chair of the Nominating Committee, and as Vice Chair of Region 4.

Professor Poole holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Michigan State University, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from Baylor University.
