Crystal Sellers Battle is Professor of Music and department Chair at Bluffton University, where she teaches voice and vocal pedagogy and conducts the university and community gospel choir. A faculty member since 2009, in her time as Chair she has instituted a new series of performance events, developed new practices for performance considering COVID-19 protocols and created a digital music lab which specializes in state-of-the-art, industry-standard music creation software and hardware.

She has served as a recitalist, judge, vocal clinician and honors choir conductor for various areas around the country. For several years, she has served as a Vocal Health workshop clinician for the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference. At the Ohio State University, she was the first doctoral student to complete the Singing Health Specialist interdisciplinary graduate specialization. In that program, she studied medical tactics for repairing vocal injuries and rehabilitation of professional vocalists. Her Doctor of Musical Arts document titled ‘I sing because I’m Free:’ Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer is currently in works to become a book series on healthy pedagogy for gospel singers.

Professor Sellers Battle earned a postgraduate diploma from Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England; a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Ohio State University; and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in voice performance from Chicago College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, Chicago, and Bowling Green State University, respectively.
