MARK W. PHILLIPS serves as the Head of the Department of Music and Theatre at Prairie View A&M University. Prior to this appointment, he was the Department Chair at Virginia State University and Director of Bands. Professor Phillips was also Director of Bands at Livingstone College. His career started as a public school music teacher at Prince Edward County High School in Virginia. In addition to his administrative duties, he is an active clinician, adjudicator, performer and guest conductor.
Professor Phillips’ honors and awards include being selected to perform at the Honda Battle of the Bands nine consecutive times, and three times at Madison Square Garden. He was featured in the movie Marching Band (2008) that aired in France and has performed at the White House for the past President’s HBCU Initiative for Funding. Professor Phillips is currently a member of the HBCU-National Band Directors Consortium, the National Association for the Study and Performance of African American Music, the Texas Music Educators’ Association, and the Texas Association of Music Schools. He also serves on the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors.
Professor Phillips serves NASM as a visiting evaluator.
Professor Phillips holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma and Master of Education and Bachelor of Music degrees from Virginia State University.
