NASM Optional Supplemental Questions for Self-Study


This document contains several optional sets of questions that can be used in various ways in the course of the self-study process and/or as a basis for writing the Self-Study document. It is intended for institutions that wish to explore one or more issues in greater depth during the course of the Self-Study. No institution is required to use this document or the questions contained within it. Institutions are welcome to add, subtract, combine, and otherwise alter any question set to make it applicable to their specific needs.

    • Composition/Improvisation (applies to all professional undergraduate degrees in music and to all undergraduate degrees leading to teacher certification)
    • History and Repertory (applies to all professional undergraduate degrees in music and to all undergraduate degrees leading to teacher certification)
    • Performance (applies to all professional undergraduate degrees in music and to all undergraduate degrees leading to teacher certification)
    • The Liberal Arts Degree in Music (applies to degrees titled Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science unless these titles are used for professional degree content or for programs that lead to teacher certification)
    • Purposes [replaces the “Mission, Goals, and Objectives” title] (applies to all institutions irrespective of size, scope, or program offerings)
    • Notes for Music Faculty and Administrators:  Standards for Composition/Improvisation and History/Repertory in Undergraduate Professional Degrees in Music (may be used in conjunction with the above advisories on (1) Composition/Improvisation and/or (2) History and Repertory)
