Jean Newton

Jean Newton is the Executive Director of the Music Conservatory of Westchester, a position she has held since November 2011. She joined the staff and faculty in 1995, and has held a number of positions including Director of Development and Dean of Students and Faculty. She formerly served on the faculties of Manhattan School of Music and Queens College. The Music Conservatory of Westchester is a nonprofit community music school serving 2,500 students each year ranging from pre-school children to senior citizens. As a faculty member, she established the Conservatory’s Baroque Ensembles and has coached students and faculty in early music performance practice.

Executive Director Newton has served on peer review panels for the United States Department of Education, New York State Council on the Arts, and Massachusetts Cultural Council. She serves on the executive board of the Westchester County Arts Leadership Association, and the Education Committee of Arts Westchester.

Executive Director Newton made her New York recital debut at Merkin Hall in 1983. She was a founding member of the New York Baroque Ensemble and the Cantabile Chamber Players and has performed extensively in the New York area as a soloist and continuo player.

Executive Director Newton serves NASM as a visiting evaluator.

Executive Director Newton holds a Master of Arts degree in Harpsichord/Early Music Performance Practice from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in English Literature from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. She studied harpsichord and chamber music with Paul Maynard, Louis Bagger and Elaine Comparone, and historical tuning and temperaments with Alan Mandelbaum and Hugh Gough.
