Tayloe Harding is Dean of the School of Music at the University of South Carolina. As President of the College Music Society from 2005–2006, he led the creation of the Engagement and Outreach Initiative, and at his current institution, Dean Harding formed SPARK: Carolina’s Music Leadership Laboratory. Both of these entities are designed to advance and connect the work of college music unit faculty, staff, and students more closely to the musical needs of the communities they serve. He has served as President of Pi Kappa Lambda and of the CMS Fund, the College Music Society’s foundation, where he led the successful Beyond Fifty Capital Campaign for the Society from 2007–2011. An active member of and consultant for CMS, SCI, NAMM, and ASCAP, he is a frequent presenter on issues facing the future of university music units and their leadership. As a composer, Dean Harding has earned commissions, performances, and recordings for his works around the world.
He has served NASM on the Board of Directors as Secretary from 2014–2020 and as Chair of Region 7; as member of the Commission on Accreditation from 2006–2012; and as Chair of the Nominating Committee.
Dean Harding received a Doctor of Music degree in Composition and a Master of Music degree in Composition from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Florida.
